Pest problems are often sudden and unpredictable. The number of pest control measures has been increasing in Finland for a long time. More and more control is carried out by a professional, e.g. to comply with environmental regulations.

The increase in pest control has been influenced by urbanisation and increased demands on the quality of housing, as well as climate change, which has created new living conditions for various pests.

Rat or big rat (Rattus norvegicus)

• The exact number of rats in Finland is not known, but it is estimated that there are up to half a million of them. Based on the observations, rat populations are increasing throughout the country.
• The costs of rat control are typically around 1,000 euros.
• It is important to carry out the control without delay. Because rodent control is regulated, effective control is practically always carried out by a professional. If the control is not done correctly from the start, the costs will increase and the rats will have time to damage the structures of the houses.
   

Bed bug (Cimex lectularius)

• In housing companies, the bed bug problem usually begins with an individual resident's holiday trip. If there is no insurance, the notification may be delayed, and the pests may have time to spread.
• As the bed bug problem spreads, more residents will have to live elsewhere for the duration of the control. Depending on the size of the housing company, the costs can rise up to 15,000 euros.
   

Sugarworm (Lepisma saccharina)

• The sugarloaf is a fairly common unpleasant visitor in buildings of all ages.
• The caterpillar spreads through sewers and along the structures of the house.
• When a problem is detected, it usually affects the entire building, and prevention must often be carried out at once on a building-wide basis.
